Born to Mexican immigrants in the Silvis, Illinois rail yard, newly married Joseph Sandoval was drafted in 1944 and shipped to Britain where his unit helped fight the second stage of the Normandy invasion. In April 1945, Pvt. Sandoval and his fellow soldiers were told the war was over. Joe was killed just days later by German forces near the Elbe River. Emmanuel Juarez portrays Joe Sandoval in this memorable portrait of an ordinary soldier in extraordinary circumstances.
